The Friday Five (yay!)

March 29, 2019 in

Happy Friday, my beloved! When we return from this upcoming weekend, March will be over. Here in coastal New England, it sure did come in like a lion and is thankfully going out like a lamb.

For awhile I was going the Friday Five linkup via Live Journal. Because I write most of these posts in the early morning before work, the link up posts were not there.  Duh....why not just do my link up the following week? I'm embarrassed that I didn't think of this sooner.

1. What size (twin, full, etc.) is your bed?
Year before last, we upgraded to King. We bought a Serta iComfort "Blue Max  elite luxury 5000"
Holy moly, it is the mot comfortable bed I've ever slept in.
The only problem now is when we go on vacation. No other bed is as comfortable and it becomes hard to sleep.

2. How many pillows do you sleep with?

Okay, so on the bed there is a ton. Its a king and would look naked without them.
But, when it's actually lights out time, I just sleep with 1.

3. Do you have a weighted blanket? If so, does it help you?
I had no idea that any such thing existed. Now, I'm intrigued!!

4. Do you sleep with any stuffed animals?
Nope. I can do better than that.
This little scamp sleeps with us every night.
Decoy is welcome too as well. He prefers to sleep down stairs though.
To anyone who wants to chime in about why you shouldn't co- sleep with dogs, please see here:

5. Do you have to have the TV on to go to sleep?

Noooooooo. No. No.
To me, bedrooms are not for TV watching.
Don't take my word for it though. Read below"

A TV does not belong in your bedroom

18 Reasons to keep the TV out of your bedroom

Also, Dr. Phil says that having a TV in your bedroom reduces the frequency of intimate relations among spouses by 50% . I love you, Golden Girls re-runs, but not that much.

Welp, that is all five!
What about you? Inquiring minds what to know!
Have a great weekend and stay safe :D

Little details that will make you look more put together

                                                      Source : Rachel Zoe

Hi there, I hope all is well in your world today.
The other day I got to thinking (scary, I know) about some women you meet just look so put together-ALWAYS. I have a friend like this. I ran into her the other day. She had on the most darling outfit. She looked VERY high end and expensive. We got talking, her top was from the sale section at Ann Taylor Loft (It looked Chanel) and her jeans were from American Eagle. Head to toe, her attire was under $100 she told me.
It got me thinking to one day this past winter when I was at the grocery store. This lady was carrying a bag that I know costs over $2000 and wearing a jacket which I knew cost $1,700. Yet, this lady with all the expensive things looked down right unkempt.
What was the difference between these women? The details. As always, the devil is in the details.
The lady in the grocery store clearly had spent a small fortune on her things. However, he coat didn't fit her correctly. He boots were beaten all to heck (easy enough to do here in New England). Her hair was straggly and her makeup , well we'll just say that her makeup was something.

So, I sat down and brain stormed which little details make a big impact in my opinion. Here is what I came up with:

  • Your nails do matter
Ragged cuticles and chipped polish should not wield the power that they do to make you look unkempt.  Its a small detail, but its something that people do notice. Same is true when we are talking about feet. More than once, I've seen a lady who otherwise looked lovely. Yet, she had thick, calloused heels showing through her sling backs. Suddenly, that was ALL I could see.
I get it, not everyone can get a mani and pedi at will whenever they like. That's fine. It costs nothing to use a pumice stone on your feet in the shower. As for your finger nails, Even if you can't get out for a mani, you can still keep them looking great. Get some cuticle oil , an emery board and buffer.

  • Hair is a big component
Hair is one of very first things we notice on each other. If your goal is to look put together and polished, you have to pay attention in this area.
If you have dry, frazzled, over processed hair, it will make you look cheap. Trust me, I speak from experience on this one. In my early 20's I over did the highlights and flat iron. When I look at pictures of me from then, I cringe.
Dead ends, greasy roots, unnatural colors are all things that will make your hair and your hair and overall look , look "cheap".
Strive for healthy, shiny hair that is free of excessive amounts of products.

  • Take care of and know when to part with your things
I dealt with this once recently myself. A pair of shoes that I love, had their best days behind them. They were scuffed beyond repair and were showing how well loved they were. I hated to do it, but it was time to toss them out.
Things like loose threads, unpolished shoes, fallen hems, stains, missing buttons, wrinkles and rips all say "I'm a slob". Other people DO notice these things.

  • Know the difference between comfy and sloppy
This one is a biggie. There is NOTHING wrong with being comfortable. Being comfortable is a very good thing. However, its a thin line between comfy into sloppy territory.  Cute, clean slip on sneakers = Comfy. Ugg Slippers worn out of the house =Sloppy. Yes, even the ones that have a sole.
A well made pair of yoga pants that hits at your ankle are comfy, but still cute. Yoga pants with a flared bottom that are dragging on the ground getting dirty are sloppy.

  • Know when to ease up on certain things
Somewhere along the way, we were conditioned to believe that more is always more. The more contour on your face, the better. The more extensions in your hair, the better. Thing is though, this simply is not true.If someone looks at you and all they notice is fake hair, and too much makeup, I can all but guarantee that you'll be noticed, but not for what you want

  • Invest in a few classic accessories
Somethings truly are timeless. A nice watch, diamond (or CZ) studs, pearl drop earrings, a nice leather bag, a pair of classic sunglasses... These are all things that literally never go out of style. When you pair these things up with the hottest trends, you are saying :I stay current, but I'm no slave to fashion."

This is what comes to mind for me as to little details that make a big impact on my overall sense of looking put together.
What about you? What do you do when you like to look refined? Please share your tips with me! :)

Welcome back from the first weekend of spring.
Full disclosure, this post is more for my friends in the north. I've got nothing but love for the southern belles among us. Those lucky babes though, have been living in spring since about February 1st.
Those of us in the north, well we are just starting to feel the warmth of that spring sun.

It can be somewhat perplexing as to how to dress right about now. You can have a 40 degree day, then a 65 degree day.
Even on the chilly days, it just feels wrong to be wearing boots and chunky sweaters now.
On the other hand, we know its NOT the time to go full out sundresses and flip flops.

Here are a few things that I put into practice this time of year to make my fashion transition into spring.

  • Start with your shoes
While its still not sandal season, now is when you can start working in open toes and sling backs.

If the only modification you made to your outfit was to swap out your ankle boots for a pair of shoes like these here, you'll still be feeling like you are dipping your toe into spring 2019.

  • Go for open shoulders and or quarter length sleeves
It's still not short sleeve or sleeveless weather for the most part. Again though, we don't want sweaters. We'll be too hot by mid day. The open shoulder/ quarter length sleeve is ideal for now.

  •  Get a light weight jacket
Here in New England where I live, we have almost no chance of going without a jacket until mid May. I do not want to be putting on a fleece or puffer vest. While those items are so comforting in October, they just seem wrong in April.

  • Get a Mani/ Pedi in a lighter, brighter color
From September through March, I live for dark nails. I love me some "Lincoln Park After Dark" .  Now though, a bright nail is perfect. Bonus points for the fact that even a spring blizzard cannot stop us from wearing this.

  • Lighten up your hair a tad
When I was a wee one, my hair was naturally blonde. After April and summer vacations, I'd be blonder after long days spent playing outside. Nowadays , I have to pay for those highlights. Truth be told, I do so gladly. A bit of lightening and brightening says "I see you, Spring!"

  • Get or apply a sunless tan
This is the biggest no brainier on here. Even if its 70 out there, if I'm looking at my bright, white skin...all I'm thinking and feeling is winter.
Start out this time of year with a lighter shade. The goal isn't to look like you just spent 3 weeks in St. Bart's. The goal now, is to look like you took a nice long walk on an afternoon in May.

Also, I can think of a few things NOT to do just yet. Soon you can, I promise. Remember though, the objective here is to transition into spring with grace.

  • No Flip Flops Yet
  • No Sundresses just yet
  • No summer type materials (linen, searsucker, etc)
  • Put away anything that is wool or fleece
  • Put away all boots other than rain boots

Well, that's all I can think of that I personally do. What about you? Do share!

Back in the old days, women would wear one single shade of eye shadow from lid to brow. The color would often be something garish , as that is what was in style at that moment with no mind paid to if that color actually looked good on the individual's complexion.
Quite often, these colors would be bright blue or sea foam green.

See what I mean....
Yikes. That's all I can say. Thank goodness, this has changed. Its widely agreed upon in the makeup industry that it was the late Kevin Aucoin who changed this. I've been thinking how Kevin Aucoin himself should have a whole post devoted to him. Expect that soon.

Then, for awhile people were thinking that they should match their eye shadow to their eye color. "You have green eyes? Well, wear green eye shadow!" Once again, yikes.
Somewhere back in the 1990's we started realizing, if you want to make your eyes "pop" , use the exact opposite color on the color wheel.

Starting with green eyes, because that's what I have and am therefore most familiar with.

While the exact opposite color of green is red, purple and plum shades are also opposite green.  If I'm looking to make the green of my eyes really stand out, I'll put on shades of purple eye shadow. The wow factor is real.
My cousin, Marcella is a professional makeup artist. She has since moved back to Barcelona where she was born and raised. While she was here in the states though, she worked at Fox News in NYC doing the makeup for their anchors.
It was her who first put purple shadow on me. I protested BIG time at first. I was thinking I'd look like some 1980's girl who was transported through time. I was shocked to see that purple did not mean "loud" or "gaudy". Still to this day, its my go to, to make my eyes pop.

For our blue eyed babes, you'll look stunning in gold and sand toned eye shadows.
The contrast from the golden shades will make blue eyes look more blue than ever before. The same is true with peach shades.

Moving on to our beauties with hazel eyes, things get a tad more complex. Hazel eyes have so many different colors in them. So, you really need to decide which colors you want to make pop.
For reference, I'm talking about green/tan/gold hazel eyes. If you have those amazing eyes that are bright blue with a rim of gold around the pupil...I'm extremely envious and for this purpose, you should consider them blue.
However, if your hazel eyes are similar to this:
I find that a combination of pinks and light, milky chocolate colors will look outstanding. Also, if you are looking to make your hazel eyes look more green than brown, go for the purples and plums.

Last, but in no way least we have our brown eyed vixens. You my friends, have more versatility and leeway in regards to eye shadow colors than anyone else.
In my opinion, the best colors on your beautiful brown eyes are either copper and bronze or light gray. The warmth of the copper and bronze compliment the warmth in brown eyes. Conversely, shades of cool toned gray, contrast warm brown eyes and there for, make them stand out.

                              L'oreal "Because I'm worth it" quad $8

                                                         Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Palette $53

There you have it. What colors do you think make your eyes look their best?

Hello there. How is this week treating you? Has  it started to feel like spring where you are?

Nowadays, we get bombarded with "Buy this" "This tool right here is a game changer!"
I don't know about you, but I've been hoodwinked into buying something useless more than once in the name of beauty.
Today, I thought I'd share with you a few of the things I've acquired over the years that are actually worth it.

First up,  DryBar's After Party Shower Cap $16.00
This cap is like no other shower cap EVER. It locks out every last bit of water and humidity.
If you have hair that you don't wash every day, you NEED this. This is worlds away from those cheap, clear plastic shower caps.

Next up, a Jade Roller
I'm not putting a link in here, because the place I've found to get them the least expensive is at TJ Maxx or Marshalls.
Leave it in your fridge. Then when you put your creams and serums roll this all over your face in upward strokes.
Aside from feeling wonderful, it helps your products absorb into your skin.

I've talked before about cleaning your makeup brushes ( read that Here)
This little gizmo helps you to get ALL of the makeup out of your brushes. It has a handle that keeps it attached to your wrist to free up both hands.

You might be thinking "No way do I need a $20 makeup sponge!"
I thought the same thing. I went through and endless amount of less expensive expensive spongers, never quite understanding they hype. Once I tried the real deal though, it clicked. See my post about cleaning brushes for a surefire way to clean your beauty blender. With regular cleaning, it will last you for months.

An eye lash curler is a necessity. I remember being so afraid of these when I was a little kid! Happily for me, I got over that fear in my teen years. This one is so well made and worth buying. It gives you the perfect curl.

Jumping back to hair, I love my Infinity Pro by Conair  $50.00

This is a hair brush that spins in both directions. Its like using a blow dryer and round brush in one step. I have VERY thick hair and a lot of it. Many tools like this won't work on my hair, but this one does. The secret is to not use it to replace your hair dryer, but to use it to replace your flat iron or curling iron. It's SO much less damaging than a scorching hot ceramic or metal.

Finally, there is the Clarisonic Mia Smart Profile $250
Where do I begin? This will get your skin cleaner than its ever been. It will blend your foundation into airbrushed perfection. It will clean your pores. It will prevent black heads. It will massage your face and neck.
This is the one I have. You can buy a less expensive one to start and add in the different heads piece by piece.  I've been using a Clarisonic brush since 2007, so I knew that I was all in with this.

So, these are the things that come to mind for me that are absolutely worth it.
What did I miss? What do you know that I don't? Please share!

RIP, Real Housewives

March 18, 2019 in

Welcome back from the weekend, friends. I hope that nobody is hung over after yesterday!

When we are children, we "outgrow" things constantly. Our clothes, playing hide and seek, etc.  I find myself surprised to say, this has happened to me now as an adult.

I used to be obsessed with Real Housewives. It didn't matter which city, OC, Atlanta, NJ, NY...I loved them all. I don't remember if it was NJ or Atlanta that I started with. It was one of those that had initially sent me down the rabbit hole.
For literally an entire decade, this was my guilty pleasure. I used to live for the reunion shows with Andy Cohen as the circus' ring leader.

Back in the fall, I was watching RHWOD and found myself thinking how caustic and vapid I found Brandy to be. I continued watching finding myself enjoying it less and less. While 20-something me had loved them, 30-something me started finding all of them flat out insufferable.
In my life, I have no patients for drama and toxic people. That being the case, WHY would I want to watch that? Even though, I know its all manufactured drama, why would I want to waste my time on that?

A few months back, I made the conscious decision to "Vibrate Higher.  I'm all done with petty, toxic stuff. There is truly no room in my life for conflict, resentment, bitterness or insecurity, even if its just on TV.

My time is precious. There are countless better things that I can do with it instead of watching a bunch of grown women with bad lip injections and obvious face lifts fight over the most trivial things.
I feel icky, for a lack of better word watching these so called adults spend FAR beyond their means as they struggle to portray this uber affluent lifestyle for our viewing pleasure.
Guess what? Stuff does not equate to wealth.
I can't keep track of how many of these reality alum have had their houses foreclosed, tax liens or enormous civil suits? Its just ridiculous.

We all are aware at how much of a problem bulling is. We all say we are opposed to it. So, why would I give rating to a bunch of adult "mean girls" who do nothing but talk behind each other's backs and form clicks that would put 6th grade girls to shame? No thank you.

I value the sanctity of marriage. Why would I want to watch and glorify someone who made a career out of and took enormous pleasure out of being the "other woman"?

So, it was fun while it lasted. It's been real, Real Housewives. The time for us to part ways has come though. Its partially me, as I've grown as a person. It's mostly you, though. I don't have time for your nonsense.

Tinsley, I'll still follow your IG though, I love your fashion.

Luck O the Irish

March 15, 2019 in

Hello there! Happy Friday!
This weekend is St. Paddy's Day ( Paddy, NOT Patty).
You might or might  or nights not know that my ancestry is full blooded Irish.
Though my days or nights of going out to party are LOOONG over, I still observe and enjoy St. Patrick's Day.
You won't find me wearing green, as I don't own any green clothing. Fun fact, green is my least favorite color.
I do have a few Irish knit sweaters. I might break one of those babies out. It will depend on the temp as those sweaters are practically as warm as a winter coat.

I thought it might be fun to do a little Irish/ Luck Quiz today.

1) Have you ever found a 4 leaf clover?
Yes! A few. One of them is the cover photo for this post.

2) What is your "lucky" number?
8 and 17.  8 because its the infinity symbol and 17 has just always followed me through life.

3) Have you ever won anything?
Yes! A radio contest once and $300 on a scratch ticket. That one is remarkable because I don't play the lottery at all. I think of it as a tax on the willing.

4) Do you have a good luck charm?
I have a pair of pearl earrings that one of my brothers bought for me when I turned 21. I've had many great days when I've worn them.

5) Is St.Paddy's Day lucky for you?
As a matter of fact, yes! It was on St. Paddy's Day a few years back I started my job. This is the best job I've EVER had. I literally look forward to coming in everyday.

I'd love to hear your plans for St. Paddy's Day.
Whatever you do though, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not drive drunk or buzzed. Don't let anyone else do that either.
Have a wonderful, fun SAFE weekend party people.

Hello Friends! Sunday starts Ulta's 21 Days of Beauty. Arguably, the biggest and best beauty sale of the season.
Here are my recommendations as to what to get. I'm only suggesting things that I have personally used myself.

I'm so excited for the IT superhero mascara. This stuff has become my holy grail mascara. It has all buy replaced false eye lashes for me. I probably go through 10 tubes of it a year.

Another great deal is the Clarisonic brush heads. I'll admit, I've tried off market versions that I found on Amazon. They just are not the same.

The deal on MAC's Long Wear Paint Pots cannot be beat either.

Okay, these are my picks. Did I miss anything that is a must for you? Do tell. You know you'll be able to twist my arm!

Save it for a rainy day

March 13, 2019 in

I absolutely love rainy days, I always have. Bonus points for rainy SPRING days. They are especially great if you can stay in under a cozy blanket, binge watch "your" show and cuddle up with your favorite person and or pet.

Sometimes though, that's just not an option though (boos and hisses all around) .  When we are expected to be a functioning member of society and its pouring out, you can sill look cute.

Get yourself a great, bright rain jacket
                                                 Coast Waterproof Hooded Jacket $160

I'm partial to this one by Joules. I have this exact coat myself. Its 100% water proof. It looks adorable on.

Another one that caught my eye is this one by North Face.
North Face Zoomie Waterproof Rain Jacket $149

I know that I'm pulling out my basic card here, but for those rainy muddy days, you are going to want a pair of rain boots. I know its all been done, but why not get yourself some Hunter Boots?  Black is ALWAYS a great choice. You could do a pretty color though, like these powder blue ones!

                                                            Hunter Rain Boots $150

One thing to keep in mind before you purchase a pair of Hunter Boots is your calf's circumference. The Original Hunter Boot has a circumference of 15.2 inches. If your calf is wider than that, these will not fit. I've seen so many people on ThreadUp or Poshmark trying to sell brand new Hunter Boots. My suspicion is that this is the very reason why.
If you think that these might be too tight of a fit for you, don't despair! Hunter makes an adjustable version.

Hunter Original Tall Adjustable Back Waterproof Rain Boot $160

I have three pairs of the regular and one pair of the adjustable backs. The look the exact same on. The adjustable backs are also a great choice if you want to wear the thick book socks with them.

While we are at it, what a rainy day without a cherry umbrella?

I just received this adorable "Koala me maybe" umbrella as a GWP from Lilly Pullitzer. Sadly, its not something they sell.

Luckily though, there are plenty of adorable umbrellas that are available in stores.
Look at that one with rainbows!

Then, there is this umbrella by Longchamp who had me at "dog". Its pricey , but bright and adorable!!

So, the moral of the story is that you CAN be totally cute and fashionable in the rain. Still though, if I get the choice, I'll be in my comfy-cozy's on the couch with coffee in hand and doggy at my side ;).
